Sometimes bad things happen to good people. We never planned on falling into foreclosure nor did we ever plan on becoming such a public voice for the victims of foreclosure but sometimes life puts you on a path you did not choose.
When our small children’s furniture store went out of business, we lost both of our modest incomes and we financially deteriorated. We had no income but my wife became creative with stretching meals (thank goodness for Ramen Noodles!) and we literally managed to eke out an existence on just dollars a week while keeping things as normal as possible for our 3 children.
Foreclosure was inevitable. We had nowhere to move so I had no choice but to try and delay; and delay is what I did. With no money for a steak, let alone a lawyer, I learned to do it myself and since I had no job I had the time to study the system and learn the ropes.
Once my wife and I both got full time jobs, we cheerfully called the mortgage company to tell them we were back on our feet and could make this next mortgage payment. YES! We survived this trying time and things were going to be normal again…. but NO! The mortgage company did not want our mortgage payment. They wanted all the money owed plus fee plus fee plus fee… literally thousands upon thousands of dollars. They did not want to modify, they did not want to work with us so we just kept fighting. As of September 30, 2009 it will be 884 days since we last made a mortgage payment and we are still fighting.
We are a good family. We try hard to live a life of meaning, a life that is value and God centered and we are positive, hardworking, and honest. It breaks our heart to see other good people in a bad situation tossed out of their homes and that is why we wrote this book and created the website… to let these good people know they have options. Sure, many foreclosures are investments and “flips” but many more are FAMILIES. Help us spread the word, help us educate these good people, help us get the stigma of foreclosure out of the closet and into the courtrooms.
Stand up! If we could do it, you can too!
